The sports activity coupe, aka ‘coupe-crossover,’ body style and segment took off in popularity in the early 2010s, following the introduction of the BMW X6. While the combination of an SUV’s tall ride height with the lines and profile of a coupe-inspired four-door sedan divided opinion among the automotive media and consumers, this then-radical segment soon drew other entries from other luxury European brands who also wanted to cater to this segment that had unexpectedly surged in popularity among new car buyers; in particular SUV-dominant markets in the United States, the Middle East, and China.
