There was a time when Toyota and Nissan were the top two Japanese automakers, and very close in terms of capitalization, market share and influence. Competition was rife during those days and Nissan was always looking to outscore its rival, so when Toyota launched the first Lexus in the shape of the original LS in 1989, Nissan was ready to answer.
