The Genesis GV80 Is Finally Getting the Hybrid It Needed

New hybrid fills an important gap in the GV80 lineup

The Genesis GV80 is one of the most comfortable luxury SUVs in the midsize segment, and it’s also a solid performer when equipped with the 375-horsepower V6. But at a time when hybrid demand is increasing, the lack of a more efficient GV80 model has become more noticeable. That’s set to change soon, as Genesis has just detailed a new-generation hybrid powertrain for this BMW X5 competitor. With a new liquid-cooled battery, much better efficiency, and nearly as much power as the V6, this powertrain could be the one to have in the GV80.

Genesis 2.5 Turbo Hybrid System In Detail

The new hybrid system pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine with two electric motors. The first is a starter-generator motor that takes care of engine starting and power regeneration, while the second is a drive motor that provides propulsion and enables regenerative braking. 

Combined, the system produces 357 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque. Compared to the standard 2.5-liter turbo engine, those are increases of 16% and 26%, respectively. Genesis claims a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) time of 7.1 seconds, so it’s not as quick as either of the non-hybrid models. 

The key advantage of the new powertrain is, of course, efficiency. According to internal Genesis tests, the 2WD hybrid model is around 25% more efficient than the gas 2.5T version. By U.S. EPA standards, the RWD 2.5T gets up to 22 mpg combined, so a 25% improvement would result in a figure of around 27 mpg. 

Several rivals have plug-in hybrid powertrains, making a direct comparison less accurate. However, the Lincoln Nautilus and Lexus RX are similar in size and also have conventional hybrid powertrains. These models get up to 30 mpg and 36 mpg combined, respectively. Based on estimated EPA figures for the GV80, it’s not quite as efficient as these rivals, but we can only confirm this when EPA ratings are published.

An EV-Like Driving Experience

Even though it’s not a plug-in hybrid, Genesis claims the GV80’s new hybrid powertrain has been optimized to engage the electric motor during a range of different driving conditions. This boosts efficiency while also making for lower noise levels. Engine noise and vibration are further reduced during a cold start, as the system initially makes use of EV Mode until the vehicle reaches around 18 mph.

A key feature of the system is the liquid-cooled battery, the first of its kind from the Hyundai Motor Group. Compared to air-cooled systems, liquid cooling allows for better temperature management and higher maximum discharge output. EV Mode is maximized during stop-and-go driving in traffic, and the Final Drive Gear Ratio was also lowered to reduce engine noise levels.

Genesis also announced the introduction of new two-tone colors for the GV80, including Obsidian Black with Taiga Green and Ultramarine Blue with Travertine Beige. New quilting patterns, wood options, and a special grille for the hybrid are coming, too. It’s not clear if U.S.-spec models will receive all these changes.

“We expect the new powertrain to deliver a differentiated driving experience by achieving a finely tuned balance of efficiency, refinement and performance,” said Sean Lee, global head of Genesis. “Beginning with the GV80 Hybrid, Genesis will continue to respond proactively to evolving market conditions and customer needs while introducing innovative technologies that embody the brand’s distinctive character and philosophy.”

Pricing isn’t available yet, but by going for a non-plug-in hybrid system, there’s a good chance the GV80 will be more affordable than PHEV alternatives in the same class.

Why It Matters

While Genesis has a few EVs, it has no hybrid offerings in the U.S. presently. That puts it at a disadvantage alongside many rivals. The new powertrain will make an already well-rounded SUV even more competitive. Although the GV80 Hybrid’s performance and efficiency specifications are good rather than outstanding, they still broaden the appeal of this luxury SUV. With a hybrid GV70 on the way, too, as well as the introduction of the brand’s first performance model—the GV60 Magma—Genesis is slowly expanding into new segments as it looks to pass several older luxury marques in overall sales.
