Next year, AMG will be 60 years old. Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher walked away from safe and secure jobs at Mercedes-Benz to establish a company that built racing engines, not knowing they’d eventually end up back where they started. For years, AMG remained an independent company, only obtaining the rights to sell and service its cars at Mercedes dealerships in 1990. But in 1999, Mercedes obtained a controlling stake in AMG, and that’s when the savagery really started.
