The BMW i3 dates back to 2013, having launched five years after the Tesla Roadster first hit the market, but the German luxury brand’s history with electric cars dates back much further than that. BMW has actually been tinkering with battery power since at least as far back as 1969, when it first came up with the concept for the BMW 1602e, built in 1972, just in time for the Oil Crisis.
