The Takata airbag scandal, which is the largest recall in automotive history, was responsible for at least 35 deaths and 400 injuries in the US as of 2024, but American drivers may not be out of the woods when it comes to supplemental restraint system safety. Following investigation of the crash, the death last month of a Dallas-area motorist has been attributed to a faulty, aftermarket inflator in their 2018 Chevrolet Equinox. The inflator ruptured upon impact, creating dangerous projectile shrapnel.
