Buying an ex-rental vehicle carries risks, namely that the car has likely been abused by dozens, if not hundreds, of drivers. However, Hertz is stepping up to make buying one of its ex-rental vehicles significantly more appealing, announcing a new 3-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty for eligible vehicles.
This warranty, provided free of charge, applies to most vehicles sold by Hertz that are 5 model years old or newer and have been driven fewer than 75,000 miles (120,700 km) at the time of sale. Crucially, this isn’t a bumper-to-bumper warranty; it’s limited to the powertrain, including specified components of the engine, transmission/transaxle, and drive axle.

The website for Hertz Car Sales does not specify which powertrain components are included in the warranty, noting that a complete description of covered components and exclusions is available in a customer’s limited warranty agreement. It’s worth noting that used vehicles sold by Hertz may still have manufacturer warranty coverage, depending on age and mileage.
Hertz says it’s launched a new free warranty in part because the average age of vehicles on US roads has reached a record 12.8 years, and it also notes that the average cost of owning and operating a vehicle has exceeded $11,500 annually.
“Consumers are keeping vehicles longer and placing greater importance on reliability, protection and long-term value,” Hertz Car Sales executive vice president Jeff Adams said. “100K Mile Protection reflects our commitment to helping customers buy and own their next vehicle with greater confidence. Combined with our large selection of single-owner, near-new vehicles that are typically one year old or newer, it gives customers added peace of mind from the day they purchase and throughout their ownership journey.”
Owners will need to pay a $100 deductible for each covered repair visit with Hertz. For certain breakdowns, customers may also be eligible for rental car, towing, and travel breakdown reimbursements. Although the warranty is advertised as being for 100,000 miles, this isn’t on top of how many miles the vehicle may have already covered and is inclusive of it. Once a vehicle’s odometer ticks over 100,000 miles, or after 36 months, coverage will end.
