At its CEO Investor Day, Hyundai made clear it is taking its electrification push in new directions, well past the conventional hybrid and battery-electric offerings. The automaker put to rest any speculation by confirming that a Hyundai Santa Fe EREV and an all-new Genesis Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) are set to make their debut next year with a powertrain meant to put range anxiety behind you while you still enjoy the smoothness of an EV.
In many ways an Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) has more in common with a fully electric car than your typical hybrid or plug-in. The distinction lies in how it is powered: electric motors turn the wheels, but the gasoline engine does not drive the vehicle directly. Its job is to act as a generator, topping up the battery when necessary.
The result is an EV-like driving experience that doesn’t have you at the mercy of public charging stations or making frequent stops for a charge. With a smaller battery than a traditional BEV, the system is lighter and less costly, yet it extends the range considerably. It is a concept that is seeing a resurgence in the industry as manufacturers seek to move away from massive battery packs in regions where the charging network is still being built out.
When the 2027 Hyundai Santa Fe EREV comes to market in the first half of 2027, Hyundai says it will be capable of more than 600 miles of total range, which would place it among the top electrified SUVs in terms of distance.
Full specs have not been provided, but the Santa Fe EREV should come with dual electric motors for standard all-wheel drive, one on each axle.
Genesis is also in line for its own Extended-Range EV in early 2027. The company has not put a name to the model, though there is an expectation in the industry that the Genesis GV70 EREV will be the first to roll out.
What has been confirmed is the target: a driving range of some 640 miles, edging out the Santa Fe. Should those numbers hold up, the Genesis EREV would rank as one of the longest-range luxury SUVs of its kind.
