Familiarity Sells
Chinese automakers using designs similar to familiar models like the Land Rover Defender is nothing new. The exact reasons behind this approach can be difficult to pin down, but it can become a conversation starter, especially among fans of the models that inspired it. It can also attract prospective buyers who may not be able to afford the original and instead choose a more attainable alternative.
One such case could be the MG 07 midsize sedan, which has officially launched in China with a starting price of just 108,900 yuan, or about $16,200 at current exchange rates. Its resemblance to the Porsche Taycan – a luxury electric vehicle that starts at $111,900 – is hard to miss. This is not to imply that MG copied Porsche, but for buyers who consider design a major factor, the MG 07 appears to be a far more attainable alternative to the Taycan.

The Specs Do Some Talking Too
After all, CarNewsChina reports that the MG 07 is available with an all-electric powertrain producing up to 235 kW (315 horsepower) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque. It is also available with a 91-kWh battery that provides a claimed range of up to 845 km (525 miles).
A plug-in hybrid variant is also offered for buyers who still want the option of filling up at a gas station. It uses a 1.5-liter engine producing 82 kW (110 horsepower) and an electric motor delivering 152 kW (204 horsepower). Under China’s CLTC standards, the PHEV has an electric-only range of 245 km (152 miles) and a combined range of 1,745 km (1,084 miles).
While the MG 07’s overall shape and rear end recall the Porsche Taycan, its front fascia looks more like that of a Toyota Camry. The interior, meanwhile, features a 15.6-inch floating infotainment screen, a driver’s seat with power adjustment, heating, and ventilation, a “Queen” zero-gravity passenger seat, and a 21-speaker audio system. Offering these features at such a low price shows why Chinese cars can have a competitive edge, especially among budget-conscious buyers who are not concerned with badge prestige.

A Crowded Market Demands Bold Moves
MG will begin delivering versions of the MG 07 with 650 km (404 miles) of range in China at the end of August, followed by the 845-km (525-mile) versions in October.
Competition in China is fierce, with weakening domestic demand prompting automakers to expand more aggressively into export markets. Any way to stand out – including adopting familiar design cues – could help brands attract attention in an increasingly crowded market. As such, don’t expect this trend to disappear anytime soon.
