2028 BMW M5 Spied Wearing Its New Face

A New Face Coming Soon

It’s been three years since BMW debuted the current generation 5 Series. While its looks are still debatable, it still looks relatively fresh. But for those who are familiar with BMW life cycles, we’re getting pretty close to it getting a facelift.

As BMW shifts to its Neue Klasse design language, it’s a no-brainer that the updated 5 Series will apply the same look to an extent. That also means the M5 will get the same treatment, so there’s a lot to look forward to here. Either way, the philosophy behind the current model is being slowly set aside after a relatively short time.

Spied Yet Again

Spy shots of the Neue Klasse-fied 5 Series have come up from time to time, and we have a general idea of what to expect from it. Both the standard models and the M5 have been seen with bags of camouflage, seemingly shedding the covers for every spotting.

This time around, it’s no different, but it’s the M5 doing shakedown laps on the Nürburgring. It doesn’t appear to wear its production headlights just yet, but we do have a glimpse of the taillights that look a shade darker than before. Interestingly, though, one of the test cars has what seems to be DOT side marker lights at the front.

With that in mind, is BMW testing at least two types of M5s? Note that the European and global models have to produce more power with the electric motor, while the North American models retain the same engine-only output from before. Perhaps BMW is checking if a more engine-reliant version is up to scratch.

The Wagon Was Spied, Too

Apart from the sedan, the M5 Touring was also seen stretching and cruising around the demanding track/one-way toll road. It’s not wearing side markers, though, but we would be totally surprised if BMW had a new Touring test car configured for the U.S/Canadian market for shakedown.

In all fairness, the new M5 appears pretty well-behaved on track. That said, we wouldn’t know for sure because it’s the test drivers that have all the feedback. Either way, the facelifted M5 is slated for the 2028 model year, and it could debut sometime in early 2027.

For now, we’ll have to wait for the regular 5 Series facelift debut, and that one could be revealed before the end of the year.
