2027 Mitsubishi Pajero Goes Land Cruiser Hunting With Ladder Frame, Diesel Power, And Upmarket Interior

After a long hiatus, Mitsubishi has introduced a new generation of the Pajero, reviving one of the most iconic off-road nameplates. Positioning the model as its global flagship and describing it as a cross-country SUV, the Japanese automaker combines rugged underpinnings with modern tech and an upmarket cabin.

The new Pajero measures 4,920 mm (193.7 inches) long, sized to compete against the Toyota Land Cruiser 250 Series. The SUV has a boxy stance with modern styling features including T-shaped LEDs. The cabin has a three-row, seven-seater layout featuring soft-touch materials, a 14.3-inch dual-screen setup, and a digital “Multi Meter” display for off-road telemetry.

The SUV is based on the ladder frame chassis of the Mitsubishi Triton, albeit with model-specific suspension and sound insulation. Under the hood lies a 2.4-liter diesel engine with a single variable geometry turbocharger. The company has yet to reveal the output of the non-electrified powertrain but confirmed it generates 480 Nm (354 lb-ft) of torque.

Power is transmitted to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox a standard 4WD system featuring Mitsubishi’s Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) system with selectable drive modes. The diesel is expected to be joined by electrified powertrain options in the future.

Production of the new Mitsubishi Pajero will take place in Thailand, next to the Triton. Initial market launches are set for Thailand, Japan, and Australia during by spring 2027, ahead of a wider rollout to 100 global markets in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

While Mitsubishi has confirmed that the Pajero will be sold as the Montero in certain export markets, no decision has been made regarding a U.S. launch that might follow at some point in the future.
