Mercedes-Benz describes the GLS as the S-class of SUVs, which may be apt for its potential customers, who are looking to combine luxury with a commanding view of the outside world from inside their high-riding cocoons. The GLS has now been on sale in the US since 2007, and was aligned with the S-Class naming hierarchy almost a decade ago.
