Germany’s love affair with motorhomes isn’t just growing, -it’s gone full road trip mode. What was once a niche lifestyle has now become a national trend, with over 1 million motorhomes officially registered as of April 2025. That’s one million vehicles ready to skip hotels and test the limits of public parking regulations.
According to the latest figures, Germany’s motorhome fleet has more than doubled since 2020, now totaling 1,002,562 vehicles. The most popular choice for conversion? The Fiat Ducato from Stellantis, which alone accounts for a massive 42.6 percent of the country’s recreational vehicle (RV) population.

Digging through the data from Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) reveals a consistent rise in mobile home sales over the past decade, aside from a dramatic two-year pandemic-era spike. In 2020, sales rocketed by 41.4 percent before cooling off in 2022 with a 17.6 percent drop.
Even so, long-term growth has held strong. In 2024, Germany saw 74,718 new motorhome registrations, a nearly threefold increase (190 percent to be exact) compared to 2014’s 25,746 units.
Europe’s Biggest Rolling Home Market
Germany is dominating continent-wide. Combined sales of caravans and motorhomes made it Europe’s largest leisure vehicle market in 2024, accounting for 96,392 out of roughly 221,000 new registrations. That puts it well ahead of France and the UK, confirming the country’s title as Europe’s rolling-home capital.
The Most Popular Models And Age Groups
The Fiat Ducato still wears the crown, with 427,590 units registered in Germany, giving it a commanding 42.6 percent share. That puts it miles ahead of the VW Transporter (13.5 percent), Citroen Jumper (8.6 percent), Ford Transit (6.2 percent), and Mercedes Sprinter (5.6 percent), all of which seem to be fighting for the leftovers.

Unsurprisingly, diesel remains the overwhelming fuel of choice. Of all RVs on German roads, 97.4 percent run on diesel. Gasoline-powered models come in at 2.3 percent, while alternative powertrains, despite all the buzz, are barely a blip on the radar. Pure EVs make up just 0.00015 percent, hybrids sit at 0.00010 percent, and plug-in hybrids are even rarer at 0.00004 percent.
Motorhome ownership in Germany is largely a retiree’s game. The biggest age group is 60 to 69, accounting for nearly 32 percent of owners. Those in their fifties make up 26.4 percent, while younger drivers are practically nonexistent, as just 1.7 percent are under 30.
