Arguably, there has been no greater influence on the performance saloon than the BMW M3. Initially conceived in the mid-1980s as a homologation special to go racing in the gladiatorial German Touring Cars series, over the two generations to follow, the M3’s traits defined the category: a naturally-aspirated straight six, a manual gearbox and rear-wheel-drive.
