Usually, when an automaker is patenting something to do with having hands on the steering wheel, it’s to do with automated driving. Not in this case, though. CarBuzz has uncovered a Porsche patent filed with the German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA) for technology that uses hand placement on the steering wheel to allow what Porsche calls a top-speed driving mode. According to Porsche, this would avoid the need for something like a second key – an example being the Hellcat Redeye’s black key for normal driving, then the red key to unlock its full 797 horsepower – but would enable access to a high-speed mode by forcing you to be in full control of the car. It’s a solution to an issue that’s become more and more common over the past ten years or so.
