- Hagerty pits Corvette ZR1X against Lucid Air Sapphire.
- The drag race also brings the VW Golf R and BMW M2 CS.
- Both headline cars can run the quarter-mile in 9.1 seconds.
Just how quick is the new Corvette ZR1X? According to Chevy, it can reach 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 1.89 seconds and power down the quarter-mile in 8.675 seconds at 159 mph (256 km/h). But those figures were recorded on a specially-prepped drag strip, which isn’t exactly reflective of real-world driving.
That’s where Hagerty comes in. It recently got its hands on the new ZR1X and set about seeing just how quick it is down the main straight of Willow Springs Raceway, which doesn’t have a prepped surface. As part of the test, it also brought along the quickest car it’s ever tested, the Lucid Air Sapphire, as well as a VW Golf R and a BMW M2 CS.

For this head-to-head drag race. The Golf R, one of the quickest hot hatches out there, was positioned 300 feet behind the ZR1X and Air Sapphire, giving it a huge advantage. By comparison, the rear-wheel drive BMW M2 CS was placed 300 feet ahead of the Chevy and Lucid, and 600 feet ahead of the Golf R. For this race, the two 1,200-hp rocketships and the Bimmer could only set off once the VW had crossed the starting line for the quarter-mile race.
It may sound a little convoluted, but it resulted in a superb race. By the time the Golf R blasted past the Corvette and the Air, it was traveling at 67 mph. As the other three cars took off, the VW had a big advantage, but it wasn’t long before the ZR1X and Air Sapphire blasted past it.
The Chevrolet and the Lucid both crossed the finish line in 9.1 seconds after each rattling off 2.0-second sprints to 60 mph (96 km/h), truly ridiculous numbers for street-legal cars. The Lucid slightly edged the Chevy, hitting 157 mph (253 km/h) compared to 154 mph (247 km/h). By comparison, the BMW M2 CS remains a very quick car, running the quarter-mile in 11.5 seconds while the Golf R needed 12.5 seconds.
