Mazda is a bit like a corporate dog with a particularly tasty bone. It has stuck with the concept of the rotary engine for a long time, long after most other OEMs abandoned the idea. The heyday of the rotary for Mazda stretched between 1967 and 2012, but the company has more recently taken up the rotary case again. However, rather than putting such an engine under the hood of a proper enthusiast car, Mazda decided to use it as a generator within an electrified drivetrain. This was certainly a shift from tradition, but it also exploited some of the rotary’s unusual characteristics.
