Ford Isn’t Going With the Flow
Saltwater can easily damage different vehicle components by accelerating corrosion. Ford may be on top of things after filing a patent describing a beach mode that could automatically move vehicles away from rising tides.
Published on October 8, 2026, the patent, first discovered by Carmoses, uses different sensors and even weather forecasts to predict where the shoreline will be at a particular time. If the system detects a risk of rising water reaching the vehicle, it could warn drivers or automatically move the vehicle to another location on the beach. Based on its intended purpose, the technology could be handy for beachgoers who may be going for a swim or campers who may already be asleep without noticing rising water.

A Different Kind of Beach Day
While the name Beach Mode implies a mode designed for driving on the beach, this is actually more of a preventive solution. For that particular situation, Ford offers models like the Bronco with Sand Mode, which is ideal for driving over soft, dry sand. It also engages four-wheel-drive high and the rear locking differential, helping improve traction and reduce the risk of getting stuck.
The patent didn’t disclose any models potentially receiving the system. However, unlike Ford’s G.O.A.T. (Goes Over Any Type of Terrain) modes found on off-road-oriented models, Beach Mode could, in theory, work on a wider range of vehicles, as it primarily relies on sensors, environmental data, and automated vehicle controls rather than dedicated off-road hardware.
That said, the proposed ability to move a vehicle automatically, potentially without the driver manually operating it, could introduce additional safety and regulatory considerations. Still, if brought to production, it could help drivers prevent saltwater damage, which can not only be costly to repair but also pose safety risks.

Don’t Get Washed Away
For now, Beach Mode remains a patent application, meaning it is not guaranteed to reach production. Ford may have filed it to protect the idea from competitors, or the technology could eventually be used in future products.
This system is just one of the many patents the Blue Oval brand has recently published. There’s the built-in sleeping platform that could turn a vehicle’s cabin into a makeshift bedroom, perfect for camping. If paired with the patented Beach Mode, it could bring even more convenience. Another camping-friendly invention is a fold-out screen integrated into an electric pickup truck’s front trunk, also known as the frunk, potentially turning it into an outdoor entertainment center.
