Compared with other automakers, Volkswagen has a penchant for building complicated engines. You don’t have to spend much time thinking before you come up with examples like the 6.3-liter W12 or the 5.0-liter V10 TDI, both of which were venerated for their mechanical prowess but scorned for their lack of reliability. However, one of VW’s modern powerplants turned out to be extremely reliable.
