BMW Turns the Page
When BMW unveiled the Vision Neue Klasse concept in 2023, it marked a new chapter for a brand with a long history of delivering high-performance combustion cars. It previewed a completely new approach – from the design language to the battery technology – that has since produced the pioneering iX3 and i3.
Now, BMW is crediting the Neue Klasse with helping it reach the milestone of two million fully electric vehicle deliveries. While that figure includes deliveries of the original i3, launched in 2013, the Bavarian automaker highlighted the importance of its modern EV platform, saying, “This shows the tremendous importance of the Neue Klasse for the ongoing ramp-up of electromobility at the BMW Group.”

Built Across Borders
The two-millionth example was a BMW i5 M60 xDrive, which was produced at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing in Germany and delivered to a customer in Spain. The automaker builds EVs across several plants, including the iX3 at its Debrecen facility in Hungary. It also assembles EVs in China, where long-wheelbase versions of the iX3 and iX5 are offered exclusively.
In the U.S., the Spartanburg plant in South Carolina is preparing to produce the iX5, which will become BMW’s first EV built stateside. Just south of the border, the automaker also plans to build the iX3 and the i3 in Mexico, though it remains unclear whether future U.S.-bound examples will come from there instead of Europe.
As availability of the iX3 increased, BMW’s EV sales in Europe rose 38% year over year to 81,445 vehicles in Q2 2026. EVs also made up 28% of BMW Group’s European sales in the first half of the year. One in three fully electric BMWs ordered in Europe was an iX3, while half of all X3-family orders were for the electric variant – highlighting the brand’s growing momentum in the EV space.

Adding plug-in hybrids to the tally – which should include the BMW XM that has struggled to gain traction – the company said it has delivered around 3.5 million electrified vehicles globally since 2013.
Amid import tariffs and slower EV demand in the U.S. – where BMW is also discontinuing the iX – it could take some time for the Neue Klasse to gain traction stateside. The rollout will be spearheaded by the iX3, with U.S. deliveries scheduled to begin in late September 2026 at a starting price of $61,500.
