A Semi Hit A New York Overpass At Full Speed And Took A Camry Down With It

The driver of a semi-truck in New York came away from a violent meeting with an overpass without a single injury, which is more than can be said for the driver of a Toyota that the truck hit on its way down. That driver was hospitalized.

The accident happened around 12:20 p.m. on the southbound lanes of the New York State Thruway in Rockland County. A truck running behind the semi caught the incident on dashcam, and the footage shows the top of the trailer meeting the overpass at freeway speed. There is no brake check, no swerve, no moment where the driver appears to register what is about to happen.

The force of the impact immediately tilts the truck, carrying a shipping container, before it rolled onto its side and slid down the road. In a cruel twist of fate, the driver of a black Toyota Camry just so happened to be sitting on the highway shoulder at the time and was struck by the truck.

Authorities had to close the road for several hours while they cleaned up the mess. The trucker, South Carolina resident Parnell Harris, was fined for having a vehicle exceeding the maximum height of 13 feet and 6 inches. Whether this was an accident or it was intentional isn’t known, but it doesn’t really matter, as the driver should be aware of the height of the load they are carrying at all times.

Toyota Driver Injured

CBS News reports that the unnamed driver of the Camry had to be rushed to the hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. The extent of these injuries hasn’t been released, but the driver is expected to survive.

Despite the bridge taking a hefty hit, the Thruway Authority says it did not suffer any significant damage to require repairs. The bridge was previously hit by a tall truck three years ago, and repairs were made.
