Station wagons are considered a niche vehicle in the United States, save for one: the Subaru Outback. In fact, this one model is so popular, it has accounted for over 85% of sales for the bodystyle. There are two ways to look at this situation: buyers love the Outback because it offers the proportions of a wagon with the lifted practicality of an SUV, or Subaru’s insistence on straddling the line between lifted-wagon and traditional crossover is actually holding this model back from even bigger sales success. With the 2026 Subaru Outback, it’s clear the Japanese automaker has settled on the second theory.
