The inline-six was one of the first engine configurations auto manufacturers experimented with. They quickly realized the benefits of its perfectly balanced layout, and the now-defunct Dutch automaker Spyker is credited with the first automotive straight-six engine, having fitted its 60 HP race car in 1903.
