America loves its rugged off-road SUVs. Vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, and Toyota 4Runner ride on body-on-frame truck platforms, delivering a combination of capable off-road performance and old-school charm. But body-on-frame SUVs are also quite difficult to import to the United States. They kill fleet efficiency. They struggle to meet stringent American safety standards without incurring costly modifications. And that’s before you get to the uphill sledding against established competition from a sales perspective. The result is a plethora of body-on-frame SUVs that are seriously cool but cannot be sold in the United States.
