The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has been testing cars for decades, but it only started awarding the best and safest models in 2006 with its “Top Safety Pick” award, and then updated with a second level of advanced safety award dubbed “Top Safety Pick+” in 2013. The Institute measures vehicle performance regarding many aspects of crash testing, along with headlight brightness, to determine its top picks. There are now six more models in the top tier category of safety for 2025, including models from Hyundai and Kia, joining 13 Top Safety Pick models and 39 more Top Safety Pick+ models for this year so far.
